Biomedical Dry Needling
Biomedical Dry Needling is a relatively new modality for treating patients with Soft Tissue Pain and Sports Injuries; utilizing an acupuncture needle, it aims to reduce muscle pain and dysfunction by releasing tight areas in the muscle known as myofascial trigger points.
Trigger points give rise to spontaneous pain or pain in response to movement, stretch or compression leading to reduced muscle function, muscle weakness and restricted range of motion, as well as local or referred pain.
The end result is a self-perpetuating ‘pain cycle’ which will continue instead of fade – also called a reflex arc facilitating muscle spasm.
Introducing a new stimulus (i.e. the needle) impedes the reflex arc and has the effect of relaxing the muscle, and directly treats the body's neuromuscular system. The needles used are "dry" meaning they have no ability to inject or withdraw fluid. This technique was first described scientifically in the late1970s.
